RESUMEN

This work aims to deepen etymological, semantic, sociocultural and philosophical issues in relation to the concepts of distance and presence for their understanding of relevance and pertinence in the context of the current scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, it is intended to argue that the radical dichotomies of common sense around such concepts do more harm than good in the clarification necessary for taking decisions and attitudes that protect individuals and collective health and life. The coronavirus pandemic requires the need for a clear discernment, supported by philosophical and scientific knowledge, which lead to a change in a set of attitudes, values, perceptions and sensitivities in relation to responsible social distancing, often contaminated by discourses without argument or a solid knowledge base. From a methodological point of view, this work performs a reflexive theoretical incursion in an essay style form, whose objective is to formulate hypotheses about the role that the concepts of distance and presence acquire from the context of COVID-19 onward, and how they should also be positioned in the context of future pandemics that may happen. Of course, this requires a re-education in the treatment of such concepts in light of the act of caring, as well as concerns about health, well-being, the individual and social life. To deepen these aspects, the spirit of this work will be supported by theoretical references that intertwine philosophical questions about presence and distance associated with human values, such as: affection, ethics and solidarity, philosophical questions about the use of face masks, and how such concepts are discussed and related with the idea of caring for and protecting the health in the context of COVID-19. The goal of these reflective support structures is to deepen our discussion of philosophical issues in the face of attitudinal challenges, which will result from new social relations demanded during the COVID-19 pandemic period as well as the challenges that will emerge in response to the social habits that will have to become naturalized, with greater frequency, in the post-COVID-19 period. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

RESUMEN

This work provides a general idea of how the COVID-19 pandemic has been addressed in a Brazilian context, since the first confirmed cases provoked a wave of disbelief in relation to the infectious and deadly potential of the pandemic. Initially, this was proved in large part by the proliferation of discourses discrediting the seriousness of the moment the entire country was going through and disregarding the lack of health infrastructure and the absence of investments in several vulnerable areas, such as education, health, technology, and scientific research. In addition, other areas of knowledge and social aspects proved to be in need of being observed and improved, such as women's rights, minority rights, strengthening measures to combat hatred, intolerance and racism, respect for professionals of education and health. From a methodological point of view, this work performs a reflexive incursion on COVID-19 based on data collected, mainly from news agencies, newspapers and scientific magazines, with a view to the possibility of establishing a more up-to-date cut of the reality present in Brazil as a result of coping with the pandemic. Several contexts of realities experienced in Brazil are presented. These include the issue of education in the context of the pandemic, violence against women in the context of the pandemic, violence against health professionals in the context of the pandemic, the issue of Indians and quilombolas in the context of pandemic, and, finally, the significant role of the mainstream media in confronting the serious and deadly pandemic. Such cultural cuts aim to raise questions that can nurture some learning in relation to what can and should not be done, in acute moments of desperate survival. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this chapter is to discuss how the Brazilian education system has been able to adapt to respond to new teaching demands because of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Brazil had to offer quick responses to the epidemic times, with the restriction of many activities of social contact, to avoid the risks of infection and morbidity. During the global pandemic period, online education brought new meanings to knowledge mediation, as well as ways to provide didactic-pedagogical content, evaluation methods, and ways to encourage permanent learning. The new educational normal has forced Brazilian educational institutions to think of new resilient pedagogical models to preserve health and life. However, the drastic educational solutions showed the levels of socioeconomic inequalities regarding access to quality education. Social disparities in the Brazilian educational field revealed the world of the digitally included and excluded. Thus, some aspects of improvised online educational strategies will be analyzed in terms of pandemic and post-pandemic challenges. © 2022, IGI Global. All rights reserved.

RESUMEN

The goal of this article is to reflect on the value that care and caring currently assumes in the context of Brazilian health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Some denialist narratives served to transform doctors and nurses into public enemies, who often began to be harassed. The collected data were based on government documents, scientific articles and current information from journalistic media, aiming to deepen reflection on the issue of the need for recognition of the professional and humanised role of health caregivers in times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
